Dorothy Irene Height, born on March 24, 1912, excelled academically before graduating from New York University. She became a leader at the Harlem YWCA, advocating for integration.
Inspired by Mary McLeod Bethune, Height joined the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), focusing on civil rights issues. Serving as NCNW president for 40 years, she led initiatives supporting voter registration and aiding civil rights activists nationwide.
Height advised political figures and played a key role in organizing the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, advocating for women's inclusion.
Her international work included teaching in India and collaborating with the Black Women’s Federation of South Africa. Height received numerous awards, including the Citizens Medal Award from President Ronald Reagan in 1989 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. She passed away on April 20, 2010, leaving behind a legacy of activism.
